Jackson-Bey closing in on rushing record

Donnie Jackson-Bey looks to lead his Northeast Pennsylvania Miners into their North American Football League crossover game against the Hudson City Stars tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Edward Edwards Stadium in Lehman Township.

The 31-year-old Bridgeton, N.J., native, in his eleventh semi-pro season after a stellar college career at Lackawanna College and Delaware State, stands just 132 yards shy of the national semipro rushing record.

“I never thought that I would have played this long,“ Jackson-Bey said. “It’s a credit to the players that I have played with that has brought me to this point.”

According to the Website www.semiprofootball.org, the record is currently held by Frank Yanik, who amassed 15,301 yards during his 12-year career with the Binghamton Jets and Scranton Eagles.

“Over the past two or three years, my teammates have talked about the record,” Jackson-Bey said. “But I wouldn’t compromise winning a game just to break the record.”

The Miners (2-0, 1-0 NAFL) rode a stiff defense that yielded just 190 yards of offense and pair of short touchdown runs by Jackson-Bey to a 13-7 road win against the South Central Yard Dawgs last Saturday.

“South Central came into the game 2-0 and had a lot of confidence,“ Miners coach Dan LaMagna said. “It was a tough game, but our defense adjusted well to their game plan and we were able to pull out a victory.”

Hudson County (2-2, 0-1),coached by Bobbie Morgan, is coming off a 53-0 loss to the South Jersey Lynx.

The Stars are members of the NAFL Metro Division. Each NAFL Pennsylvania Division team will play two Metro Division teams, one at home and one away.

Next week, the team travels to City Island in Harrisburg to take on three-time NAFL national champion Central Penn Piranha. Central Penn comes into this weekend’s home game with the Lancaster Lightning with a 117-0 home record since the team was organized in 1995.

“This is the week that we need to straighten some things out,” LaMagna said. “The team that Hudson Valley lost to last week went deep in the national playoffs last season. We won’t take this team lightly.”
