The NEPA Miners and New York Predators did not let down the Regional American Football League (RAFL) or the fans at Scranton Memorial Stadium as two Minor League Giants battled until the final whistle blew. The game had a playoff atmosphere before kickoff as the RAFL Commissioner Adam Turkel was on hand to greet both ball clubs and Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty was on hand for the coin toss to support our hometown team. The Miners were also impressed as Collin Earyes belted out an American Idol worthy National Anthem before kickoff.
Then the war began and what a war it was. The Predators struck first with an impressive drive capped off with a scoring strike from Quarterback Lou Scala to speedy wideout Kareem Moon but the Miners took back the momentum as the extra point was no good. The defenses would play big until late in the second quarter as J.P. Antosh hit Jeremy Kendrick to tie the game up but the Miners missed the extra point. The game would not stay tied for long as the Predators struck right back on a double pass from Lou Scala to Kareem Moon who hit Harrison Tindall and the Predators would take a 13-6 lead going into the locker room at the half.
The Miners would make their half time adjustments and march right down the field in the second half led by J.P. Antosh spreading the ball around and running back Damon Saxon capping off the drive with a one yard touchdown run to tie the game 13-13. The Miners missed opportunities to take the lead as Miners Tight End Montell Knauls made a great catch and run but was stripped of the ball on the one yard line fighting three Predator defenders in an attempt to get into the end zone. The Miners also missed a field goal opportunity that would cost them later. The game was tied at thirteen for a while until the Predators Lou Scala connected on another bomb to clutch wide receiver Harrison Tindall. The Predators would get a 32 yard field goal by Geoff Wolyliec and take a 23-13 lead. But the Miners, like they have all season never die, drove right back down the field and J.P. Antosh connected with Jeremy Kendrick for a 28 yard touchdown and the score was now 20-23. The Miners would then go for the onside kick hoping to get one more shot but to no avail. RAFL commissioner Adam Turkel stated after the game how proud he was to have these two organizations represent the league as they battled to the end and did it with class. Only time will tell, but maybe these two giants will meet in the post season and do it again.
