RAFL Playoff Update

rafl4.jpg

The RAFL Playoffs have already been a wild ride with football excitement ranging from last second victories to incredible upsets. At the beginning of the regular season, over 30 teams had one goal, only one could survive. Now there are only four left, and it will be a war. Both are rematches with teams wanting redemption, both are games with rival blood. Here’s a recap of the 2008 RAFL Championship tournament, and a preview of the RAFL's Four at War.Round one stared up with wasting no time and getting right to great football. There were some victories you could see coming, but some games you just didn’t want to end.
The upset of the round was the Hudson County Bounty Hunters (5-5) going into Long Island. While it had become apparent over the course of the seasons progression that the Hunter’s had gotten steadily better, the Pit Bulls (9-1) we’re the #3 seed and looking to go deep into the tourney. But the Bounties had other plans, as they put forth a great game and upset the Pit Bulls 27-24.

In New Brunswick, the high powered offense of the NEPA Miners (7-2-1) went into NJ for a rematch with the NJ Warriors (6-4) whom they had defeated earlier in regular season. The Warriors out hit the Miners all night and put forward a 27-6 effort.
The NJ Spartans went into Plainfield for their interstate matchup playing their first ever game against the tough NJ Wolves. The Spartans battled a defensive struggle all game, but the veteran Wolves outlasted them with a 7-0 victory. The Wild Card Mariners (7-3) went to Connecticut (8-1-1) for a slugfest with the NE Knights. The Mariner defense held the Knights without a first down for almost 3 quarters and posted a 14-6 win.

The Defending Champion Prince William Monarchs (9-1) hosted the Baltimore Broncos (5-5). A good year first team, but the Monarchs were just too much for the Broncos posting a 44-6 drubbing. The Metro Nemesis (8-2) went north to face the Division winning Brooklyn Blue Devils (6-4). The Nemesis size mattered, and they bullied around the young Devils to a 22-0 victory. The Baltimore Warriors (8-2) played a “business as usual” game, and for the second week laid a loss to the injury riddled Philadelphia Braves (7-3) by a score of 24-6. In the final game of the week, we had the most compelling, and exciting. The undefeated NY Predators (10-0) went into the contest against the first year NJ Lions (5-5) and looked as they were going run the Lions out of the building. With leads of 21 - 0, 27 - 7, and 34 – 13 the Preds look like they were on their way to a lopsided victory. But the Lions had other ideas. The Lions Took advantage of Predator errors and turnover’s, and with seconds left in the game scored to pull the game within 34-33. But instead of tying the game, the Lions decided to make it an all or nothing situation by trying to convert the conversion for two. The pass sailed high, and the Predators had survived a furious come back to come away with the 34-33 victory.
In Round two, The Predators continued their quest for an unbeaten season in a victory over their division rival Bounty Hunters by a score of 27-7.

The Predators will host the semi final match against an old tough rival, the Brooklyn Mariners. The Mariners, by kicking a field goal with: 01 on the clock got by their division foe, the NJ Wolves with a 9-6 win. Both the Mariner and Predators are battle tested, and there is no love lost between the two. The Predators have a task in front of them that has not been achieved by any team in any league in over 15 years…….beat the Mariners twice in one season. The Mariners have redemption in mind, after having to take a tough road through the playoffs, they also want to avenge their loss to the Predators in October which put them on a two game losing streak and ended their ability to secure their division. The Predators played “little brother” to the Mariners for years in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, but have become a big team since their defection. This is their chance to slay the beast and stay in contention for a National Championship bid. The game will kick off 7pm Saturday night in Staten Island NY, with the winner earning a trip to Scranton for Atlantic Bowl 2.

In the Battle of Warriors, the Baltimore Warriors took the NJ Warriors to task with a 22-0 defeat. The Baltimore Warriors are technically undefeated between their old league and combining with their actual RAFL record, which includes a victory over their opponent this coming week…, the Prince William Monarchs. The Monarchs advanced with t tough over-time victory against their division rival, the Metro Nemesis 26-20.
The Warriors handed the Monarchs their only RAFL loss to date 38-24 earlier this season in convincing fashion, and the Monarchs are looking for pay back. With both teams having something to prove, and wanting to get to Scranton for the Atlantic Bowl, this game should be full of hard hitting and big plays. The Monarchs will host the Warriors Saturday evening.
