NEPA Miners Host New All American Football League Tryout at Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton 11/17/07

The North East PA Miners, our areas newest minor league football team is hosting the only professional tryout of the All American Football League (AAFL) in the state of Pennsylvania on Saturday November 17th; registration is 11:30am. The tryout will run from 12pm - 3pm at the Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton. Kickers will be taken to Scranton Memorial Stadium.

The All American Football League is a newly formed for-profit, professional football league. Teams operate as divisions of the League whose football operations will be run by a quasi-independent board and General Manager. Some of the League’s teams are hosted by universities with Division IA football programs and other teams play in independent venues. Games will be played in the spring and early summer.

The AAFL League teams employ only those players who have both completed their college football eligibility and earned a four-year degree. This policy has a very positive impact on universities’ NCAA Graduation Success Rate and their Academic Progress Rate. To the extent practical, graduates of host universities will play for the team hosted by their alma mater. Former Penn State graduate who played with the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs has been invited to the Miners tryout.

This is a great opportunity for our areas athletes to play in a professional football league,” said Miners Owner and Head Coach Dan LaMagna. The Miners are proud to bring the event to Scranton while other tryouts are being held in major cities such as Dallas, Chicago, Las Vegas, St. Louis and Seattle. The league has signed former Dallas Cowboy Quarterback Clint Stoerner, former Florida Gator QB Chris Leak and recently had former Nebraska Quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch tryout in Detroit. “One of our organizational goals is to improve football and sport in our area, bringing a professional tryout to our area is a big step,” said LaMagna. North Eastern Pennsylvania is rich in football talent, with strong high school and college programs and a strong history of minor league football. “Hopefully we can move some local talent to the next level while also recruiting some players for the 2008 NEPA Miners,” noted LaMagna. There is a $30 fee for players only trying out for the Miners; those players will receive a Nike SPARQ rating. Players trying out for the AAFL must sign up on the AAFL website by 3PM Thursday.

The NEPA Miners are building off of an impressive 8-4 first season in the North American Football League (NAFL). The NEPA Miners have also strengthened their management this season with the recent addition of Vice President of Development and Public Relations Carmon Flynn. Flynn stated, “This is a huge opportunity for the Miners and a real plus for the community. With Scranton being so strategically located in the Northeast, we feel this event will be a major draw. This equates to increased business and revenue for area businesses.”
